MG Charger Installation Bayside Melbourne
Home charging installed for every MG EV — MG4, MG4 Urban, MGS5, MGS6 and earlier ZS EV models — across Bonbeach, Chelsea, Carrum, Cheltenham, Frankston and surrounding bayside suburbs.
Real charger installs across bayside Melbourne
A few recent jobs — every charger shown here works with an MG’s Type 2 charging inlet.
MG put more Australians into their first EV than any other brand, and MG charger installation is now a regular part of the EV charging work Jack Jones Electrical does around bayside Melbourne — Bonbeach and Chelsea, Cheltenham, Mentone and out to Frankston. MG needs more care than most brands at the quoting stage for one reason: its home charging speed varies enormously between variants that look almost identical in the showroom. Jack confirms your exact model before specifying anything, assesses the switchboard, runs the dedicated circuit, commissions the charger and issues your Certificate of Electrical Safety.

What local customers say
What does MG charger installation cost?
Most MG installs sit at the lower end of that range, because most MGs are single-phase cars and a 7kW circuit is a straightforward job. The price climbs when:
- The charger needs to go a long way from the switchboard
- The board has no room or no spare capacity for the new circuit
- You have an 11kW-capable MG and want three-phase supply work to match it
Before any of that is priced, Jack confirms which MG variant you actually have — it changes what the job needs. The range above is a guide; your fixed price comes from the free on-site assessment.
Get a fixed quoteWith MG, the badge doesn’t tell you the charging speed
Most car brands are consistent about home charging. Pick any model in the range and the onboard AC charger is much the same. MG is not like that, and it catches people out.
Park an MG4 Essence 64 next to an MG4 Long Range 77 and they are the same car to look at. One takes 6.6kW on single-phase. The other takes 11kW on three-phase — near enough to double. The MG4 X-Power, despite being the performance model, is also limited to 6.6kW. Meanwhile the new MG4 Urban, sitting at the cheapest end of the MG range, takes the full 11kW on both its battery sizes.
Model years shift things too. The MY26 update dropped the Excite trims from the MG4 range for private buyers, and overseas specification sheets for current MG4 variants list different AC rates again. The discontinued ZS EV, for its part, supported 11kW three-phase across every spec level — better than several newer MGs.
None of this is guessable from the badge on the boot. It matters because it decides two things: whether a three-phase supply would do anything for you, and what size charger is worth paying for. Specify an 11kW three-phase charger for a 6.6kW MG4 and you have bought capacity the car will never draw. Jack confirms the variant and its actual onboard rate before quoting, rather than assuming from the model name.
Which MG models does this cover?
Home charger installation suits every electric MG on Australian roads:
- MG4 Excite 51, Excite 64, Essence 64 and X-Power — 6.6kW, single-phase
- MG4 Long Range 77 — 11kW three-phase
- MG4 Urban 43 and Urban 54 — 11kW on both battery sizes
- MGS5 EV — onboard AC rate confirmed on site before anything is specified
- MGS6 EV — onboard AC rate confirmed on site before anything is specified
- MG ZS EV (2021–2024) — 11kW three-phase across all variants
Every one of them uses a Type 2 AC inlet with CCS2 for DC fast charging, so any quality AC charger will work with the car.
A note on the MG ZS
The ZS EV is no longer sold new in Australia — the MGS5 EV replaced it. But the ZS name lives on, because MG still sells a petrol and hybrid ZS today. So “I’ve got an MG ZS” can mean an electric car or one that never plugs in at all, and the two need completely different conversations.
If yours is a used ZS EV bought between 2021 and 2024, the good news is that it supports 11kW three-phase AC charging on every spec level, which is more capable than several MGs sold new today. On a three-phase property it is genuinely worth specifying a three-phase charger for one.
Choosing a charger for your MG
MG supplies only a slow portable lead with the car — in Australia these are limited to around 8A, which works out near 1.5kW into the battery and takes the best part of two days for a full charge. It is fine as an emergency option and unsuitable as your everyday method. A properly installed wall charger on a dedicated circuit is the real answer.
Because MG uses the universal Type 2 standard, you are free to choose the unit. Jack installs a range of quality AC chargers — Fox ESS and Sigenergy among others — and recommends based on your variant’s actual onboard rate, your supply and your budget. For the majority of MGs, a good 7kW single-phase unit is exactly right and anything larger is wasted money.
Charging your MG from solar
An MG is a strong match for rooftop solar, particularly the LFP-battery models that can be charged to 100% regularly without the degradation concerns of other chemistries. A solar-aware charger will prioritise surplus generation over grid power, cutting daytime charging costs to near zero. Jack is CEC-accredited for solar and battery storage, so the panels, battery and car charging can be designed as one system and sized from your real usage data.
Will my switchboard handle it?
A charger needs its own dedicated circuit with proper protection, and many older bayside switchboards have run out of both space and capacity. Most MG installs are 7kW single-phase, which is the easier ask of a board — but “easier” is not the same as “fine”, and plenty of boards around Chelsea and Mordialloc still need work. Jack inspects the switchboard, mains and existing loads before quoting, so any board work is in the fixed price rather than a surprise on the day.
