Why three-phase matters more on a Kia

Most EVs sold in Australia have a 7kW single-phase onboard charger, which means a standard single-phase home supply already gives them everything they can take. Kia is the exception. With the sole exception of one EV5 variant, every Kia EV sold here carries an 11kW three-phase onboard charger — and the EV9 is rated by Kia Australia at up to 10.5kW three-phase.

The practical consequence is straightforward. Plug an 11kW Kia into a single-phase supply and it will charge happily, but at roughly 7kW — around a third slower than the car is built for. On a three-phase supply the same car draws its full rate. For an EV3 or a Niro that difference is a convenience; on an EV9 with a 99.8kWh battery it is the difference between a comfortable overnight charge and one that is still going at breakfast.

That does not automatically mean you should upgrade to three-phase. For plenty of bayside households, single-phase charging overnight is entirely adequate and the upgrade cost is not worth recovering. But it is a decision worth making deliberately, with real numbers in front of you, rather than discovering the limitation after the charger is on the wall. The EV5 exception worth knowing about

If you are shopping for an EV5, the battery you choose changes your charging setup. The Air 2WD Standard Range is the only EV5 fitted with the smaller 64.2kWh pack, and it is limited to single-phase AC charging at around 7kW. Every other EV5 variant gets the 88.1kWh pack and the full 11kW three-phase capability.

So an EV5 Air Standard Range owner gains nothing from a three-phase supply for car charging, while an EV5 GT-Line owner on single-phase is leaving roughly a third of their charging speed unused. Same model name, same showroom, genuinely different installations. Worth confirming which one you have before anyone quotes you on hardware.

Choosing a charger for your Kia

Because Kia uses the universal Type 2 AC standard, you can pair any quality AC charger with the car. On a three-phase property with an 11kW-capable Kia, it is worth specifying a three-phase charger so the car can actually use what it has. On single-phase, a good 7kW unit is the sensible choice and anything larger is money spent on capacity the supply cannot deliver.

Charging your Kia from solar

If you have rooftop solar, a solar-aware charger can direct surplus generation into the car instead of exporting it, which brings your running costs close to nothing on sunny days. Will my switchboard handle it?

A home charger requires its own dedicated circuit with appropriate protection, and plenty of older bayside boards have neither the space nor the spare capacity. On a Kia this question carries extra weight, because adding an 11kW three-phase circuit asks considerably more of your board and mains than a 7kW single-phase one.
