A-Grade Licensed Electrician CEC Accredited Tesla Certified Installer

BYD charger installation is a fast-growing part of the EV charging work Jack Jones Electrical does across bayside Melbourne — from Bonbeach and Chelsea to Cheltenham, Mentone and Frankston. BYD has become one of the best-selling EV brands in Australia, and every current model charges over the same Type 2 AC connector — so as a licensed A-Grade electrician, Jack can install and commission a home charger for any BYD, matched to your car’s onboard charger and your home’s power supply. He handles the whole job: assessing your switchboard, running the dedicated circuit, mounting and commissioning the charger, and issuing your Certificate of Electrical Safety.

What local customers say

What does BYD charger installation cost?

$660 – $2,000inc. GST, most single-phase bayside installs

A straightforward home charger install — short cable run, switchboard with capacity to spare — sits at the lower end. The price moves up when the job needs more:

  • A longer cable run from the switchboard to where you park
  • Switchboard upgrades or replacement to fit the new circuit
  • Three-phase supply work, useful if your BYD supports 11kW AC charging

Every property’s different, so this range is a guide, not a quote. Jack confirms the exact fixed price during your free on-site assessment — no surprises on installation day.

BYD charger installation: what’s involved

BYD’s rapid growth in Australia means more bayside households than ever are pulling into the driveway with an Atto, Dolphin, Seal or Sealion. Every one of them charges over a standard Type 2 AC connector, so Jack can install a dedicated home charger matched to your specific model — sized correctly rather than guessed at. With 20 years in the electrical trade, CEC accreditation for solar and batteries, and Tesla’s own installer certification, Jack brings the same rigour to a BYD install as any other EV charging job.

Choosing a charger for your BYD

Because BYDs charge over the same Type 2 standard as every other EV sold in Australia, you’re not limited to one brand of charger. Jack installs a range of quality AC chargers — including Fox ESS and Sigenergy units, alongside other leading brands — and will recommend the one that suits your car, your electrical supply, and your budget, rather than pushing a single product. If you’re also running solar or a home battery, a charger that can prioritise charging from excess solar generation is worth considering.

How fast will my BYD charge at home?

Your BYD’s onboard charger — not the wall unit — sets the ceiling for home charging speed, and it varies by model. Most current BYD models (Atto 2, Atto 3, Dolphin, and the Seal range) have a 7kW onboard AC charger, so a standard single-phase supply charges them at their full rate: roughly 35–40km of range added per hour, comfortably topping up overnight. A handful of higher-spec models — the Atto 1 and Sealion 7 — accept up to 11kW AC, so on a three-phase supply they charge noticeably faster, around 55–60km of range per hour. Installing a charger rated higher than your car’s onboard limit won’t speed things up — the car’s own limit always applies — which is exactly the kind of detail worth confirming before paying for hardware you can’t fully use.

If you drive one of BYD’s plug-in hybrid models — Sealion 5, Sealion 6, Sealion 8, Seal 6, or the Shark 6 ute — home charging is still worthwhile, though these typically accept AC power at a lower rate than the full-electric range. Jack confirms your exact model’s onboard charger during the assessment so the circuit and charger are sized correctly either way.

Not sure which supply you have? A single-phase switchboard has one main switch; three-phase has three grouped together. Jack confirms this in the first minutes of an on-site assessment, along with whether your board and mains capacity can carry the new circuit.

Which BYD models does this cover?

Home charger installation suits every current BYD in the Australian range:

  • Atto 1 — up to 11kW AC on three-phase supply
  • Atto 2 & Atto 3 — 7kW AC onboard charger
  • Dolphin — 7kW AC onboard charger
  • Seal — 7kW AC onboard charger
  • Sealion 7 — up to 11kW AC on three-phase supply

Driving a Sealion 5, Sealion 6, Sealion 8, Seal 6 or Shark 6 plug-in hybrid? These are welcome too — Jack confirms your model’s onboard AC charging rate during the assessment and matches the circuit and charger to it.

Charging your BYD from solar

Bayside rooftops and EVs are a natural pair. If you have solar, your BYD can be configured to charge preferentially from excess generation through a solar-aware charger, cutting your running costs close to zero on sunny days. As a CEC-accredited installer who’s also Tesla Certified, Jack can design solar, battery storage and your BYD’s home charging as one system — sized properly from your actual usage data rather than guesswork.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade?

Sometimes. A home charger needs its own dedicated circuit with appropriate protection, and some older bayside switchboards don’t have the space or capacity for it. Jack assesses your switchboard, mains and existing loads before quoting, so you know up front whether the job is a straightforward circuit run or includes board work — no surprises on installation day.
